7/09 Tail Standard – Full length tail tightly curles carried over the back well covered with hair. Fully coated partial length tail permissible but not desirable
Naturally tailless – no discernible tail
Malcom Willis (Geneticist) says: usually a long-lived dog. eyes: generalised progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) onset around 2-7 yrs inheritance autosomal recessive; cataract. late middle age say 7 yrs and is progressive slowly and possibly inherited.. MPS IIIB - Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB also known as Sanfilippo syndrome type IIIB is a genetic disease. If a dog is affected it is ultimately lethal . It has been identified in the US and a DNA test is available for it at the University of Pennsylvania Vet School in Philadelphia. It is a lysosomal storage disease (LSD) These aresacs within cells filled with enzymes that disband molecules. If an enzyme is missing as a result of a genetic mutation, the molecules gather in the lysosomes and then the cells deteriorate and die. Signs such a tremors, difficulty in balancing, walking and moving around obstacles usually appear between 2 and 4 yrs. It is progressive with an inherited recessive autosomal pattern. Dogs and bitches can both have the disease or be carriers. The latter will be normal with no signs. I n USA it is recommended that every breeding animal and any pups should be DNA tested for this disease. This website will give more details http://www.bonchien.com/MPS111B Although rare no breeder should be unworried. Imported dogs from the States have a high record of carrying this disease. If buying this breed ask if tests have been done and check the test certificates. Carriers preferably should not be bred from. Other problems: Diabetes mellitus age of onset can be around 4 yrs or up to 14 yrs. Females more likely but it isn't inherited. Canine follicular dysplasia whcih cover alopaecia and changes in coat colour; fairly rare but possibly genetic inheritance although not proven

COURT RULING FINLAND - CRUELTY CASE
Kennel Pectus, a known breeder of Giant and
Miniature Schnauzers from Finland has been convicted yesterday by Espoo Court for cruelty to animals.
Dog owners and breeders in Finland have known for years that their kennel holdings are under any standards, and that they treat animals cruelly.
However, it has been difficult to gather evidence which would stand in court, since for instance they never allow anyone in their premises.
Fortunately a year ago the animal welfare authorities had gathered enough evidence to raid their house and kennels. What they found can be seen in a newsclip that you can watch at http://www.nelonen.fi/uutisvideot/default.asp?video=927 (in Finnish but you see the pictures of the suffering dogs). They rescued 40 dogs, wherof 4 had to be killed for animal welfare reasons.
This resulted in a court case, which took place on Monday in Espoo. The public prosecutor presented a strong case demanding a lifelong prohibition for them to keep animals, but the Court ruling was weaker and resulted only in a one-year prohibition. I have to point out that in Finland, the prosecutor can only present a strong case, if he has clear evidence for his case.

Figure in brackets is breed average hip score HD – fairly good hips; HD – borderline hip dysplasia; HD – serious hip dysplasia population size around 2,330 Cataracts - posterior nuclear cortical are seen early in life and posterior subcapsular from 12 months or even to 6 years - inheritance suspected but not proven. Eye testing crucial. Abnormal retinal folds which might be autosomal recessive trait. Can have minimal effect or lead to faulty development and sight problems.
Mouth - overshot and undershot jaws can occur sometimes affecting teeth placement possibly polygenic and complex but missing teeth such as premolars are likely inherited as autosomal recessive for each tooth.
Hypothyroidism and pulmonic stenosis . The latter is a narrowing of the pulmonary artery attached to the heart which can cause heart murmurs and enlargement of the right side of the heart. The lack of other problems may be attached to a minority breed and lack of reporting compared to that of say the Miniature

HD average (16) Figure in brackets is breed average hip score HD – fairly good hips; HD – borderline hip dysplasia; HD – serious hip dysplasia Serious heart problems Some deafness in whites Gastric Torsion   Check for temperaments
Dr. Malcolm Willis (Geneticist) says that the Boxer can have several heart problems probably inherited but mode of inheritance not established. Includes patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) pulmonic stenosis, subaortic stenosis, tetralogy of fallot and cardiomyopathy. Most involve malformation of heart either as a foetal condition that persists or a malformation that is congenital. Several of them can cause death. Cardiomyopathy is possibly polygenic trait and is graded into categories; it involves muscle weakness of the heart and in extreme causes weakness and sudden death. Heart testing is recommended but seemingly normal dogs may pass on the condition. Several foetal eye problems can persist after birth including hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) due to failure of hyaloid artery to regress and persistent papillary membrances (PPM) in which blood vessels in the anterior chamber fail to regress. Breed can have progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) which is recessive also can have glaucoma which may lead to blindness. Cataracts also and entropion and ectropion (in-turned and out-turned eyelids)
Epilepsy - primary or idiopathic epilepsy is almost certainly a polygenic trait. Progressive axonopathy (PA) is brought about by swelling of the axons (nerve fibres) in the brain first seen as ataxia (hindlimb abnormal movement) which can progress to paraplegia. It is known to be a simple autosomal recessive and carrier animals are known. PA does sometimes still occur in the breed bit is now rare due to work done in 1980s.  Cancer - mast cell cancer but more likely mammary cancer usually in later age say 9years+. Skin diseases - dermoid sinus (cysts extending from the spinal cord to the skin) death can result. Ehlers Danlos syndrome - dog has excessive skin of fragile nature; mode of inheritance unclear. Hernias - umbilical hernias are probably inherited as a threshold trait, they present few if any problems unless very large. Alimentary system - Gastric dilation volvulus (bloat) genetics unclear. Megaoesophagus when dog is sick from about 5 weeks of ag4e or earlier; not to be confused with pyloric stenosis which is an opening between stomach and duodenum constricting food leading to vomiting, failure to eat and rapid weight loss. Skeletal problems - Not enough Boxers are being presented for hip scoring as breeders believe it is not a problem. However it sits currently in one position worse than the Bernese Mountain Dog. The current average is 15.97 out of ONLY 316 dogs scored. The Bernese KC register 800 dogs annually and Boxers ten times that amount so they need more scoring! Spondylosis caused by the abnormal fusion of vertebrae. Wobbler syndrome caused by constriction of neck vertebrae. Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the shoulder and stifle is known and some pups are born with spina bifida and others with cleft palate Other defects - As with most short skulled breeds (brachycephalic) dental problems are not rare and the selection of broad heads for breeding can account for extra incisors in upper jaw with sometimes 7 or 8 rather than stipulated 6. Cryptorchidism (undescended testicle(s) is common.

STUDY ON DILATED CARDIOMYOPATHY 2009
University of Liverpool want healthy dogs to come forward over the age of 7 or 8. Dogs must not be related at parental level and ideally not a grand parentl level either. Investigation will be performed free of charge at the University of Liverpool but you will be required to take your dog there for a full clinical examination and a full heart scan. Hair will be clipped from the sid3es of the chest in order to visualise the heart and a health screening blood test. Time involved will be about an hour. For more information or for screening appointment contact Hannah Copeland email hmc79@liverpool.ac.uk tel 0151 795 6100 main reception. If your dog has DCM already diagnosed you can contribute with a DNA sample and copy of pedigree.

Malcolm Willis (Geneticist) says Susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia. Both inherited traits for which the breed club recommends testing. Skin and Coat: Long-coated versions do appear from time to time possibly in about 5% of the breed. Acute dermatitis (hot spots). Sores need to be treated and identified by a Vet. As might be caused by self trauma, allergy or parasites. Heart: Congenital a ortic stenosis possibly polygenic (several genes involved) Eye : Entropion caused by excessive eye tissue or small eye or combination, usually lower lid. Distichiasis (double row of eyelashed) these can rub the corneal surface. Not known how it is inherited. Inherited retinal dysplasia where part of the retina detaches leading to vision problems. PRA generalised (also in other breeds) occasionally found derives from autosomal recessive gene (one from both parents). Other problems : Cruciate ligament problems can occur. Cancer as with other breeds occurs.

accredited breeders should be hip testing
Skeletal: Hip scores of parents should be lower than the breed average (above) . Hind limb lameness caused by cruciate rupture. Urinary: Urinay incontinence particularly in spayed bitches. Can be treated but for long term. Enteric: Prone to bloat (gastric dilitation/torsion) - when stomach rotation or volvulus involved there is initial discomfort but rapidly to vomiting and collapse. Urgent medical attention required.
Feet: Symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy - all paw claws crack and shed and may get infected. Cancer melanoma usually under claws often with a squamous cell cancer at same site. Other cancers:- oral, eye currently under genetic investigation. Lymphoma Epilepsy in some lines but inheritance not understood but before buying check history of parents. Eyes:- Hereditary cataract. Breeding dogs should be regularly eye tested. Multifocal retinal dysplasia (MRD) usually mild but in severe cases can lead to blindness caused by retinal detachment. Hypothyroidism:- Common - known to be caused by auto-immune attack on thryoid gland (lymphocytic thyroiditis) causing lack of energy, dry scaly skin, hair loss and reduced libido in some instances related to laryngeal paralysis. Treatable with hormones.

COURT RULING FINLAND - CRUELTY CASE Kennel Pectus, a known breeder of Giant and
Miniature Schnauzers from Finland has been convicted yesterday by Espoo Court for cruelty to animals.
